Our Preparing Youth for Adulthood (PYA) Program
HISTORY
Established in 2007, the Preparing Youth For Adulthood (PYA) program serves youth ages 14–21 in the neglect court system with a permanency goal of APPLA. The program's primary goal is to equip youth with the tools and support needed to become successful, self-sufficient adults as they age out of foster care. CASA volunteers connect youth to resources such as stable housing, help ensure they have essential documents, and a resume.
YOUTH SERVED
The PYA program serves foster youth 14-21 years old with the permanency goal of APPLA.
PROGRAM GOALS
The goals of the PYA program are to promote independence by preparing youth for adulthood beyond foster care, increase stability through access to housing, therapeutic services, and consistent mentorship, and establish strong foundations in the lives of the youth to build on when they transition out of the foster care system at age 21.
PROGRAM IMPACT
In FY2024, 81% of CASAs engaged youth in their well-being, and 100% of youth reported having a trusted adult in their lives. Additionally, 100% of youth feel optimistic about their futures and can identify positive coping skills.
ADVOCATE PREREQUISITES
In addition to the nationally recognized 30-hour CASA pre-service CASA training, volunteers in the PYA program will complete a specialized 1-hour training focused on supporting transition-aged youth. This training equips CASAs with tools to address the unique needs of young adults preparing for independence, including housing navigation, employment readiness, and life skills development.
